FAQ’s
What are Coronaviruses?Coronaviruses are a family of enveloped, RNA viruses which got the name “corona”because of the crown like spikes on their outer surface. Coronaviruses are pathogens for many animal species and humans. The human coronaviruses were first identified in the 1960s. Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and COVID-19 are disease outbreaks caused by different type of coronaviruses.
What is SARS-CoV-2 virus?SARS-CoV-2 stands for “severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2” and is a part of the coronavirus family. SARS- CoV-2 is the virus responsible for a world-wide pandemic that emerged in China in December, 2019.
What is an RT-PCR test?RT-PCR is the most sensitive and widely used diagnostic tool for diagnosis and quantification of RNA based virus infections. Other examples of RNA-based diseases are the common cold, influenza, Dengue, Chikungunya, swine-flu, polio, measles etc. As the name implies, RT-PCR is a two-step process– (i) Reverse Transcription (RT) and (ii) Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR).
Reverse transcriptase is a process which involves converting RNA to a form of DNA called the complementary DNA (cDNA). Unlike RNA, cDNA is not subject to degradation, making it more stable than RNA. As the starting amount of RNA in a sample may be very low and in order to help detection, the cDNA is amplified, where multiple copies of the cDNA are made using a technique called Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). The two steps (RT and PCR) combined together give rise to the name RT-PCR.
What are the symptoms of COVID-19?If you have been infected, symptoms may appear within two weeks of exposure, or you may remain asymptomatic and continue to pass on the infection to others. Majority of the people display only mild to moderate symptoms and respiratory distress and do not need hospitalization.

Who should get tested?
As per
ICMR guidelines
- All symptomatic individuals with history of international travel in the last 14 days.
- All symptomatic contacts of a laboratory confirmed case.
- All symptomatic health care workers / frontline workers involved in containment and mitigation activities.
- All asymptomatic high-risk contacts(contacts in family and workplace, elderly ≥ 65 years of age, those with co-morbidities etc
- All individuals undertaking travel to countries/Indian states mandating a negative COVID-19 test at point of entry.
- All individuals who wish to get themselves tested.
