FAQ’s
What are Coronaviruses? The body’s immune system produces proteins called antibodies which act as warriors and bind to the infectious agent such as bacteria, virus etc., called an antigen. In case of recent exposure, your immune system would have mounted a response and produced these antibodies. Once the antibodies bind to the antigens, they trigger further chemical reactions in the body to neutralize the antigens. Immunoglobulin M (IgM) and Immunoglobulin G (IgG) are two classes of these antibodies. CoVID-19 specific IgM antibodies can be reliably detected up to two weeks after onset of symptoms, after their levels start to decrease after that. IgG, on the other hand are formed after about 10-14 days and remain detectable for a much longer duration. There is substantial evidence that presence of COVID-19 specific IgM&IgG provides short-term (3-6 months) immunity to reinfection, atleast for majority of the population.

For most accurate results, IgG antibody testing is recommended after10-14 days of symptom onset to allow for the development of antibodies. You can also get yourself tested if you were potentially exposed to COVID-19 but did not develop symptoms.
It is also a good tool to identify donor candidates for convalescent plasma therapy.
